Nowadays the trend of plant-based diet has increased rapidly. From celebs to common people, they have started adopting a vegetarian lifestyle instead of non-vegetarianism. But a recent shocking research has revealed that people who eat vegetarian diets consume more ultra-processed food than others, which is causing them weight gain and health problems.
The research has been published in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet, which studied 'Plant-Based Dietary Patterns and Consumption of Ultra-Processed Food Products'. About two lakh people participated in this study and their eating habits were analyzed.
What does the research say?
The study found that vegetarians and vegans tend to eat more ultra-processed foods than those who eat red meat or other non-vegetarian foods. Vegetarians ate 1.3% more ultra-processed food than non-vegetarians, while vegans consumed 1.2% more.
Ultra-processed foods contain trans fats, high amounts of salt and sugar, which cause problems like obesity, diabetes, heart diseases and high blood pressure. These foods lack fiber, which affects digestion and can cause problems like constipation.
What is the problem?
Experts say that vegetarians, when they give up meat, often include ready-to-eat meals, meat substitutes and processed foods in their diet. They are high in unhealthy fats, calories and additives, which are harmful to health.
What to do?
Experts are of the opinion that fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains should be preferred in a vegetarian diet. Reduce the intake of ultra-processed food and eat fresh home-cooked food. By adopting a balanced diet, not only can weight be controlled, but health will also be better.
