Dr Vora has appealed to consumers that if they are not getting home-cooked food and need food delivery, they should wait a little and opt for fresh food delivery. He said, "Don't compromise on health. We don't want this ultra-processed garbage for 10-minute delivery."

The boom in food delivery in India has given rise to a new debate. Apps like Zomato, Swiggy and Zepto are now claiming to deliver food in 10 minutes, but there is growing concern among experts about its effects on health. Doctors and nutritionists say that this 'speed-first' approach can have a long-term impact on the health of the country.

10 minutes of food delivery can make you seriously ill

Dr Manan Vora, orthopaedic surgeon and co-founder of Nutribite Wellness, has expressed serious concern over this 10-minute delivery trend. He says that when food is delivered in 10 minutes, there is not much time to prepare it. For this, food has to be prepared in 3 minutes or less and this is possible only through ultra-processed, ready-to-eat meals, which are pre-cooked, frozen, heated in a microwave and then delivered.

Dr. Vora backs up his concerns with several studies that highlight the many health problems associated with ultra-processed foods:

  • Cancer risk: Ultra-processed foods may increase the risk of cancer by 12%.
  • Risk of heart disease: Consuming these foods increases the risk of heart disease by 10%.
  • Rise in Obesity: 27.8% of adults in India are affected by obesity, and consumption of these foods can further aggravate this problem.
  • Risk of Diabetes: Due to an increase in sugar levels the risk of diabetes increases.
  • Trans Fats: They contain high amounts of trans fats, which are linked to heart diseases.

10-minute food delivery will take your life

Dr Vora has appealed to the consumers that if they are not getting home-cooked food and need food delivery, they should wait a little and opt for fresh food delivery. He said, "Do not compromise on health. We do not want this ultra-processed garbage for 10-minute delivery."

His message quickly went viral on social media, and many agreed with it. One user said, "10-minute delivery may seem convenient, but it is a sign of danger to our health. Ultra-processed meals may be a quick solution, but its long-term effects can be serious." Another user said, "The impact of 10-minute delivery will be seen after 10 years when we will have to face more chronic diseases."

The growing problem of fast food

Bombay Shaving Company CEO Shantanu Deshpande has also expressed concern over the growing popularity of fast food in India. He called it the "biggest epidemic" and said that cheap ultra-processed foods rich in sugar and palm oil can prove to be dangerous for health. He says that excessive consumption of such foods is becoming the main reason for increasing health problems in India.

Deshpande urged food delivery companies to prioritise quality and not focus only on convenience. "Among the options we have, there is a need to promote healthy and quality food, not just speed and cheap prices," he said.

What can be done?

At a time when the speed of food delivery in India is constantly increasing, the government and food companies must come together to solve this problem. To ensure better food safety standards and give consumers the right choice, food delivery companies should show more responsibility. Health experts believe that providing healthy and nutritious food is more important than just fast delivery.
