For six months, a 64-year-old Mumbai man felt like he was living inside a Picasso painting, where every face and object appeared distorted and distorted. This painful condition made his life miserable, but the shocking thing was that even after consulting 17 doctors, his illness could not be cured properly.

The patient suffered from a variety of physical and mental problems. He was not able to sleep well, his mood swings were frequent and he was experiencing strange and frightening thoughts. According to a TOI report, Dr Ichaporia, director of neurology at Pune-based Sahyadri Hospital, said that when he came to my clinic, he was examined with just a little high blood pressure and mild movements and occasional tremors in his legs. But what was most strange was that he said that everything looked distorted and scary to him.

To understand the reason behind the unusual vision problems, Dr Ichaporia asked him to draw a human face. What he drew was like a Picasso painting – distorted and abnormal. This gave a rough idea of his mental state. He was then subjected to a series of tests which revealed a rare type of autoimmune disease. The tests revealed the presence of CASPR2 antibodies, which cause autoimmune encephalitis.

What is this rare disease?

This rare disease was attacking his nervous system, causing problems with his vision and brain. We started immediate treatment, which included immunoglobulin and steroids. His condition improved in a few months, but later new symptoms appeared. Eventually, after proper treatment and a second treatment with rituximab, his condition stabilized. This difficult journey proved how important it is to be careful and use modern techniques in identifying autoimmune diseases.
