Major Change in EPFO Rules: Aadhaar-Linked UAN Updates Made Easier

The Employees' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has introduced a significant change in its profile update process. Under the revised rules, EPF members can now modify personal details associated with their Aadhaar-linked Universal Account Number (UAN) without the need to upload any documents.

Hassle-Free Profile Updates for EPF Members

EPFO has streamlined the process for members to update their details. Users with Aadhaar-verified UANs can now edit their personal information, including:

  • Name

  • Date of birth

  • Gender

  • Nationality

  • Parents' names

  • Marital status

  • Spouse’s name

  • Date of joining

  • Date of leaving

This change eliminates the need for employer approval, reducing delays and simplifying account management for members.

No More 28-Day Waiting Period

Previously, employees were required to obtain employer approval to update their profiles, leading to processing delays of up to 28 days. With this new rule, around 45% of the total 800,000 correction requests received by EPFO in the financial year 2024-25 can now be approved directly by members without employer or EPFO intervention.

Exceptions for UANs Issued Before October 1, 2017

For those whose UANs were issued before October 1, 2017, employer approval will still be necessary for profile updates. Additionally, linking Aadhaar and PAN remains mandatory for updates and withdrawals. Discrepancies between EPF details and Aadhaar information may still lead to processing delays, depending on employer and EPFO approvals.

Understanding UAN and Its Importance

A Universal Account Number (UAN) is a 12-digit identifier that simplifies the management of Provident Fund accounts. Activating UAN and linking it with a bank account and Aadhaar is essential to avail benefits under EPFO’s Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) scheme. EPFO recently emphasized the importance of this linkage in a social media post, stating:

“Linking Aadhaar with a bank account is mandatory to avail the ELI scheme. This initiative is aimed at boosting employment opportunities in the country. Complete the process on time to avoid last-minute complications!”

How to Update Your EPF Profile

To update personal details in an EPF account, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the official EPFO website (www.epfindia.gov.in).

  2. Log in using your UAN, password, and captcha code.

  3. Select the ‘Manage’ option from the top menu.

  4. Click on the ‘Modify Basic Details’ option.

  5. Enter the updated details as per your Aadhaar card and submit the request.

  6. Track your update status through the ‘Track Request’ option.

With these changes, EPFO aims to provide a more seamless experience for employees managing their provident fund accounts, reducing bureaucracy and improving efficiency.
