Dark chocolate is rich in flavanols (natural compounds), which are helpful in promoting heart health and reducing the risk of diabetes. However, research on the link between chocolate and type-2 diabetes so far has shown inappropriate results.
They analysed data from three large US studies with more than 1.92 lakh participants in the study. All participants were healthy and had no history of diabetes, heart disease or cancer. During the 25-year average monitoring period, 18,862 people developed type 2 diabetes. The analysis showed that those who ate chocolate at least five times a week reduced the risk of diabetes by 10%.
When the analysis focused on dark and milk chocolate, it was found that the risk of type-2 diabetes was reduced by 21% in those who ate dark chocolate, while no such effect was seen in those who ate milk chocolate. The study also revealed that consuming dark chocolate every extra week reduced the risk of diabetes by 3%. The researchers suggested that further clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings and understand the reasons behind the beneficial effects of dark chocolate.
