Vaping: In the current era, many young adults are considering vaping as an alternative to tobacco cigarettes, but the use of e-cigarettes is also not free from danger.

E Cigarette Side Effects: Nowadays, apart from the youth, some children are also getting addicted to e-cigarettes. According to the Daily Mail report, doctors have raised serious concerns about the dangers of vaping in children, especially its ability to trigger severe allergic reactions. Despite legal restrictions prohibiting selling e-cigarettes to minors, statistics show that one in 4 children has tried vaping and one in ten regularly uses vaping.

Flavored e-cigarettes, which often contain allergens such as nuts, dairy or gluten, are working to get children to the hospital. NHS data highlights a 733% increase in vaping-associated hospitalisations since 2020, including for patients aged 4 years. Of particular concern are the mimicking tastes of foods or sweets, which are popular among young users, which increase the risk of allergic reactions.

Why do allergies occur?

Allergic reactions from vaping can also be caused by propylene glycol, which is a common ingredient in e-cigarettes. This compound can provoke wheezing, asthma attacks, and skin hives. One popular case involved a 16-year-old boy who nearly died in 2017 from hypersensitivity pneumonitis, an allergic condition that causes severe inflammation of the lungs.

An organization has insisted on writing mandatory allergy warnings on vaping products, citing the increasing incidence of reactions to both direct use and secondhand e-cigarette smoke. Current UK laws do not require such warnings as e-cigarettes are not classified as food or drink.

Becky Gittins, a Labour Party MP from England, stressed the need for awareness about anaphylaxis and allergic reactions associated with vaping. In response, Labour has recently introduced tobacco and vape bills to curb vaping among children. The proposed measures include banning flavours targeted at children and changing packaging to make vape less attractive to minors.

While experts generally agree that vaping is safer for adults than infection with traditional tobacco, there are concerns about its impact on non-smokers, especially the youth. Vaping is not without risk, because e-cigarettes are harmful. Its long-term health effects are uncertain, although there may be a risk of lung disease, dental problems and cancer.
