Christmas and New Year are coming, for which everyone is excited. On Christmas, people give gifts to their partners, friends and family, which the competition to buy has started. During this time, the demand for high-tech gifts like smart watches is the highest. But if you are planning to give a smart watch to your loved ones this Christmas, then definitely think once. A recent study has revealed that the strap of a smart watch can contain dangerous chemicals that can cause cancer, infertility and other serious diseases.
Researchers at the University of Notre Dame in the US studied 22 smart watch brands. Of these, 15 brands were found to contain dangerous chemicals called perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). These chemicals are called 'forever chemicals' because they neither break down in the body nor in the environment. PFAS are often used to make the strap of watches strong and durable.
What diseases increase the risk of?
Exposure to PFAS can increase the risk of problems such as cancer, thyroid, hormonal imbalances, infertility, and neurological disorders in the body. These chemicals can enter the body by coming in contact with the skin. The special thing is that the amount of these chemicals in expensive brands was found to be higher than cheap brands.
What is the danger?
Researchers said that these chemicals can enter the body of people wearing smart watches for a long time through the skin. One study found that the skin of people who used sunscreen containing PFAS for 115 days absorbed about 1.6% of the chemicals.
Keep these things in mind
while buying a smartwatch: If you are thinking of buying a smartwatch, avoid products that mention fluoroelastomers.
Replace the strap: If possible, use a leather or fabric strap instead of the silicone or plastic strap of the watch.
Limit time: Use the smartwatch for a limited time and don't forget to take it off at bedtime.
