Utility: The government clarified that it is not necessary to update Aadhaar details every 10 years!


The government on Thursday denied media reports that it had amended the Aadhaar regulation, making it mandatory for citizens to update their Aadhaar details every 10 years. However, the government said that Aadhaar cardholders who have not updated their details for more than 10 years are now encouraged to do so.

In a statement, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) said, "Some news reports on Thursday misreported that updating of Aadhaar card has been made mandatory every 10 years. It is clearly mentioned that 'Maybe' do this on completion of every 10 years."

The gazette notification read, "Aadhaar number holders may, on completion of every 10 years from the date of enrollment for Aadhaar, submit their supporting documents in Aadhaar, at least once, by submitting a Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address."


Here are the steps to update your Aadhaar address online: Step 1: Visit the Aadhaar Self Service Update Portal and click on the 'Proceed to Update Address' option.

Step 2: Log in using your Aadhaar number, registered mobile number, and OTP.

Step 3: In case of valid address proof, click on 'Proceed to Update Address.

Step 4: Enter the 12-digit Aadhaar number and click on 'Cent OTP'.

Step 5: Enter the OTP and log in to the Aadhaar account.

Step 6: Enter the new address after selecting the option 'Update proof through address proof'. One can also use the 'Update Address Vis Secret Code' option.

Step 7: Enter the residential address mentioned in the 'Proof of Address.

Step 8: Now, select the document type to be submitted as address proof.

Step 9: Upload the scanned copy of the address proof and click on the 'Submit' button.

Step 10: The Aadhaar update request will be accepted and a 14-digit Update Request Number (URN) will be generated.


Here are the steps to update demographic details in Aadhaar:

Step 1: Log on to https://uidai.gov.in and click on 'Update Aadhaar'. Then, click on 'update demographics data online.

Step 2: To begin, log in with the 12-digit Aadhaar number and enter the captcha code shown. An OTP will be received on the registered mobile which needs to be entered.

Step 3: Now click on 'update demographics data'. Then, select the data fields such as name, date of birth, and gender from the menu and click on 'Name' and proceed.

Step 4: After proceeding, another tab will open. Input the correct name and upload a valid document from a computer or laptop or device. After entering the captcha code, OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number.

Step 5: Then pay Rs.50 through various banking and credit card options.
