Pitru Paksha or Shradh is a 15-day festival that begins today, September 10, 2022. During this time, Hindus perform Shradh and tarpan to the departed souls of their ancestors. It is believed that the rituals performed during this period help the ancestors to attain salvation.

Pitru Paksha begins during the full moon day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada and will end on September 25, 2022, on the new moon day of Krishna Paksha or Sarva Pitru Amavasya.

On this day Hindus also offer Panchali Bhog. It is said that if Panchbali Bhog is not offered on the day of Shradh, then the ancestors get angry and they return hungry.


What is Panchali Bhog?

On the day of Shradh, there is a law to feed 5 special creatures including ancestors. It is believed that by feeding these creatures during Shradh, the ancestors are satisfied.

The first bhog is fed to the cow. Bhog should not be thrown in front of the cow. They need to feed it by hand.

The second bhog should be given to the dog. a dog is a symbol of duty

In Panchali Bhog, the third bhog is given to the crow.

The fourth bhog is offered to the divine powers. This bhog is either to be immersed in water or given to the cow.

The fifth bhog is offered to ants, which symbolizes hard work and collectivism.


How Panchali Bhog is offered?

To offer Panchali Bhog on the day of Shradh, five different banana leaves should be taken and food should be kept in them. This food will be prepared for your ancestors and to be provided to the Brahmin.

You can also keep urad dal Tikki and curd in the food and then offer Panchbali Bhog to cows, dogs, crows, gods, and ants.
