Ayurvedic doctor Ms. Diksha Bhavsar wrote in the caption, 'Parijat is also known by many names like night Jasmine and Harsingar. Its botanical name is Nyctanthes arbor-tristis. Parijat or Harsingar is a small ornamental tree with fragrant white flowers. The soothing aroma of its beautiful white flowers is liked by many.  

You would be curious to know that the Parijat tree blooms only at night and is known to shed all its flowers in the morning. It is known as the 'Queen of the Night'. It is a sacred tree mentioned in Hindu mythology. According to mythology, Lord Krishna brought this tree from heaven for his beloved wife Satyabhama. It is one of the five trees in heaven.

Harsingar is a plant with various health benefits. The antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of the Harsingar tree make it a boon for human health. The leaves are given for the treatment of chronic fever, arthritis, joint pain, and sciatica. Let us explore some of its healing properties.

How to use Harsingar leaves in disease 

For fever 

Parijat is known as fever repellent. It can help in curing various types of fever including malaria, dengue and chikungunya fever. Recent studies show that the extracts of Parijat leaves and bark are very useful for reducing fever instantly. It helps in increasing the platelet count in dengue and chikungunya fever. It also inhibits bacterial growth that can cause fever.

Ingredients-

  • Parijat leaves - 2 grams
  • Bark - 3 grams 
  • Basil leaves - 2-3

Method to prepare and use-

  • Take the bark and leaves along with basil leaves and boil them in water. 
  • When it is reduced to half, drink it twice a day.

For sciatica and arthritis

Sciatica is one of the most painful problems. The leaves and flowers of Parijat have anti-inflammatory properties and specific essential oils that make them beneficial in the treatment of sciatica and arthritis pain.

 For Sciatica -

Ingredients-

  • Parijat leaves - 3-4
  • Water - 1 glass

Method to prepare and use-

  • Wash the leaves thoroughly. 
  • Then grind it and boil it in water and filter it. 
  • Drink empty stomach 2 times a day.
  • You will get relief soon.

 For Arthritis

Ingredients-

  • Parijat leaves, flowers and bark - 5 grams
  • Water - 200 grams

Method to prepare and use-

  • Make a decoction of water by taking about 5 grams of leaves, bark, and flowers. 
  • The decoction is made when the water is reduced to 1/4 volume.

For stomach worms

Ingredients-

  • Parijat leaves juice - 2 tsp 
  • Mishri - as required 

Method to prepare and use-

  • Grind the leaves in a pestle to extract 2 teaspoons of juice. 
  • Then consume it with sugar candy and water.

For swelling and pain

Ingredients-

  • Parijat leaves - 3-4
  • Water - 2 glasses

Method to prepare and use-

  • Boil the leaves in water till the water becomes 1/4.
  • Then drink this decoction.

For dry cough

Are you suffering from a persistent cough and sore throat? Tea made from the leaves and flowers of Parijat is used to reduce cough, cold and bronchitis. Studies show that the ethanol extract of the Parijat plant is the best bronchodilator. It also works beautifully in asthma.

Ingredients-

  • Parijat leaves - 2 
  • Honey - 1 tsp

Method to prepare and use-

  • Grind the leaves in a pestle and extract the juice. 
  • Consume it with honey.

For cold/cough/sinus

Ingredients-

  • Parijat leaves - 2-3
  • Parijat flowers - 4-5
  • Basil leaves - 2-3
  • Water - 1 glass

Method to prepare and use-

  • Drink it like tea. 
  • Boil leaves and flowers in 1 glass of water. 
  • Add basil leaves to it and drink it like tea.

To get relieved from stress and anxiety

Night jasmine oil is used in aromatherapy to relieve stress and anxiety. It increases the level of serotonin in your brain and regulates the mood which makes you feel happy.

Method to prepare and use-

  • Apply the paste of the leaves to the affected area. 
  • If you want, take 2 grams leaves with 2-3 basil leaves and boil them in water and drink it twice a day.

For Herpes

Parijat works wonderfully as an anti-allergic, anti-viral and anti-bacterial. It helps prevent bacteria. It can also be used to treat various fungal infections of the skin.

  • Parijat leaves - 2

Method to prepare and use-

  • Make a paste of the leaves and apply it to the affected area.
