The Saudi Ministry of Commerce caught illegal workers changing the expiry dates of products at a farm in Huraymilah Governorate in the Riyadh region of Saudi Arabia, after which the workers were arrested. Products seized included 248,000 chicken stock cubes, 4,600 potato chips, 2,900 soy sauces, and 1,500 pasta sauces.

The Saudi Press Agency reported on Thursday that the Saudi Ministry of Commerce caught illegal workers changing the expiry dates of products at a farm in Huraymilah Governorate in the Riyadh region, after which the ministry arrested the illegal workers. The raid was carried out at 3 am in collaboration with Riyadh Region Police and Huremilah Governorate Police.

Products seized included 8 grams of 248,000 chicken stock cubes, 4,600 potato chip products, 2,900 soy sauces, and 1,500 pasta sauces. However, the products were later destroyed and a laser device used to print new expiry dates was also seized by the police.

Three years imprisonment

The ministry said that those who violate the anti-commercial fraud law can face imprisonment of up to three years, a fine of up to $266,623, or both. Earlier on April 27, the Saudi Press Agency had informed that Saudi authorities arrested 19,050 people in a week for violating residence, work, and border security rules. According to an official report, a total of 11,987 people were arrested for violating residence laws, while 4,367 people were arrested for illegal border crossing attempts, and 2,696 people were arrested for labor-related issues.

How many people were arrested

The report revealed that of the 1,011 people arrested for trying to enter the kingdom illegally, 61 percent were Ethiopians, 36 percent were Yemeni and 3 percent were from other countries. The remaining 24 people were caught trying to cross into neighboring countries, and 18 were caught for their involvement in transporting and harboring violators. The Saudi Interior Ministry said anyone providing transportation and shelter, as well as facilitating illegal entry into the kingdom, could face a maximum of 15 years imprisonment, a fine of up to $260,000, as well as confiscation of vehicles and property.
