The ceasefire that was signed after a long war between Israel and Hezbollah ended yesterday, i.e. on 26 January. Under the agreement, Israel had to withdraw its forces from Lebanese villages within 60 days, but Israel still retains its hold on some areas. While the Lebanon agreement was reached several months before the Gaza agreement, it has not been fully implemented.

The Israeli army says that the Lebanese army is delaying its control over the villages, that is why its forces are there. Because Israel fears that Hezbollah may regain control here. Hamas has regained its control in Gaza, but Israel does not want Hezbollah to return to its Lebanon border, and for this it has violated the terms of the ceasefire and now the US has extended its deadline to 18 February.

After the completion of 60 days of the ceasefire deadline, Lebanese citizens started returning to their villages without waiting for the army to withdraw, after which the Israeli army opened fire to stop their return. About 22 people have died in Israeli shelling, 100 people have been injured and many have been detained. After the tension increased, the White House has extended the ceasefire deadline till February 18.

As a result, Israeli forces withdrew from several villages, after both Lebanese civilians and the Lebanese Army entered the towns. Nevertheless, Israeli forces remain present in some villages.

The White House press release said, “The arrangement between Lebanon and Israel, which is being monitored by the United States, will remain in effect until February 18, 2025.” In addition, Washington announced that the Lebanese government will begin negotiations with Israel under US mediation. This round of talks will be related to the release of Lebanese citizens detained by Israel after October 7, 2023.

Later, the office of caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati confirmed that the arrangement would remain in place until February 18. Mikati's office said the prime minister discussed the latest developments in the south with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and President Joseph Aoun and the results of talks with US officials.
