Why has tension increased between India and Bangladesh regarding border fencing? Understand the whole matter.

Tensions are increasing between India and Bangladesh over border fencing. This dispute deepened further when the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry summoned India's High Commissioner in Dhaka Pranay Verma. In this meeting that lasted for about half an hour, Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Mohammad Jashim Uddin clearly put forward his concerns about border fencing.
Bangladesh has accused India of trying to fence the border at five places between the two countries, which is a violation of the border agreement between the two countries. Let us understand why this dispute started and what are the reasons behind it.
What did Bangladesh say?
Bangladesh has objected to the construction of barbed wire fencing on the border by India. Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam, advisor to the Bangladesh Home Ministry, said that the fencing work by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has been stopped for the time being due to protests by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local residents. He also alleged that due to some agreements made during the tenure of the previous government, there have been tensions between India and Bangladesh on many border-related issues.
What is the objection to?
India and Bangladesh have a 4,156 km long border, out of which India has so far fenced 3,271 km with barbed wire. According to the Bangladesh government, 885 km of fencing is still pending. They say that between 2010 and 2023, there was a dispute over fencing at 160 places. The tension is highest at Chapainawabganj, Naugaon, Lalmonirhat and Teen Bigha corridor.
Bangladesh alleges that India has violated old agreements on the border. Jahangir Alam has claimed that according to an agreement of 1975, no construction work can be done within 150 yards of the zero line without the consent of both the countries.
Jahangir Alam said, “In 1974, another agreement was signed in which Bangladesh handed over Berubari to India, and in return India had to give Bangladesh access to the Teen Bigha Corridor. But India never opened this corridor completely. They used to open it only for one hour at a time.”
In 2010, both the countries again signed an agreement in which it was decided that the Teen Bigha Corridor will remain open 24 hours. But this agreement also allowed India to fence the border.
What does India have to say?
Bangladesh expressed concern that installing barbed wire could affect friendly relations. Meanwhile, Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma said, 'There is agreement between the two countries to do fencing for security on the border. Our border security forces are in touch. It is hoped that this agreement will be implemented soon. Pranay Verma said that in this meeting, India's commitment to create a crime-free border due to problems related to smuggling, criminal activities and trafficking was discussed.
