While Russian soldiers were being driven out from Kursk, Ukraine launched a surprise attack.
Ukraine has once again launched attacks in Russia's Kursk region as the year begins. The Russian Defense Ministry informed that there have been new attacks in the Kursk region from Ukraine, the statement also said that the operation is ongoing to foil the attacks. Ukrainian officials have also been informed about a new operation being carried out in the Kursk region.
Ukraine launched an incursion into Russia's Kursk region in August last year and captured a large part of the region. In recent months, Russian defense forces have made major gains in the region and pushed back Ukrainian forces, but have failed to drive them out completely. With the help of this attack, Ukraine has once again tried to advance itself in Kursk.
When was the attack carried out?
In a statement posted on Telegram on Sunday, the Russian Defense Ministry said, “At about 9 am Moscow time, in order to repel the offensive by Russian troops in the Kursk direction, the enemy launched a counter-attack with a detachment of two tanks, one counter-obstacle vehicle, and 12 armored fighting vehicles.”
Several Russian military bloggers gave more details about the attack, saying it was launched from the Ukrainian base in Sudzha towards the villages of Berdyn and Bolshoye Soldatskoye, a district center on the way to the city of Kursk.
Ukraine's response to the attack
Andriy Kovalenko, the head of the Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation, said the Ukrainian army had launched surprise attacks against Russian forces at several positions in Kursk. Andriy Yermak, the head of the Ukrainian President's Office, said in a Telegram post, "Good news from the Kursk region, Russia is getting what it deserves."
Russia evacuated two lakh of its citizens.
Ukraine intruded into the Kursk region in the month of August and captured a large area. After which Russia has evacuated about 2 lakh people from the areas bordering it and President Vladimir Putin has condemned the Ukrainian attack and called it a 'major provocation'.
According to a BBC report, Ukraine's top commander claims that Ukraine has taken control of more than 1,200 square kilometers of Russian territory and 93 villages. However, some of these areas have been recaptured by Russia.
