When will general elections be held in Bangladesh? Yunus told me the reason for the delay!
After the fall of Sheikh Hasina, the people of Bangladesh as well as the whole world were waiting for the elections for the new government of Bangladesh. Bangladesh's interim leader Mohammad Yunus said in a television address on Monday that Bangladesh is planning to hold parliamentary elections at the end of 2025 or in the first half of 2026.
Giving information about the roadmap for the elections, Yunus said that the timeline of the elections depends on the recommendations of the Election Reforms Commission, but it may be possible to hold elections by the end of 2025, according to a Bloomberg report.
In a televised address during Victory Day, Yunus said, “If the political consensus decides that we must, and I repeat, ‘must do it’, complete the elections with minimal reforms and an accurate voter list, this could be possible by the end of 2025.”
Need of the hour for Election Commission
Mohammad Yunus further said that the Election Commission should be given enough time to implement the necessary recommendations and improve the electoral process. He further said that if the voter list is prepared on time, then elections can be held in Bangladesh by the end of 2025. However, he said that if comprehensive reforms are taken into account then the elections can be held by the first half of 2026.
Let us tell you that the interim government has formed a commission to conduct elections in the country, which has to submit its report to the Chief Advisor within 6 months.
Making voter list is not easy
According to a report in The Daily Star, Yunus said, "This time the task is more challenging because voters did not participate in the last three elections and the voter list has not been verified for 15 years." Sheikh Hasina's opponents did not participate in the election process because they believed that there is no point in voting when the Hasina administration wins the election by rigging.
