When the Pakistani military court sentenced Imran's supporters, America and Britain got angry
Pakistan's military courts have been under question for years. The US, Britain and the European Union on Monday strongly criticized the decision of the Pakistan Military Court to sentence 25 civilians. These citizens were accused of attacking army property during the protests that took place after the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in 2023.
The Pakistani military court has sentenced the civilians to two to 10 years of imprisonment. This decision has raised fears among Khan's supporters that military courts will play a big role in cases related to Imran Khan.
Criticism of the decision
The US State Department said that Washington is deeply concerned that a military court has sentenced Pakistani citizens for participating in the protests on May 9, 2023.
The UK Foreign Ministry said that "the prosecution of civilians in military tribunals lacks transparency, independent scrutiny and undermines the right to a fair trial."
At the same time, the European Union has also issued a statement on this decision. The EU said that these punishments do not match Pakistan's commitments under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
protest against imran's arrest
Imran Khan's supporters had attacked several military offices and vehicles in protest against his arrest. After his arrest in May 2023, Imran Khan was released for some time, but was arrested again in August, since then he has been in jail.
His supporters are constantly protesting for his release. Let us tell you that since he was removed from the post of Prime Minister in 2022, he has been accused in many cases and since then his party PTI has been protesting against Shahbaz Sharif.
