When Bangladesh kept postponing the extradition of India's wanted Anup Chetia, Sheikh Hasina finally sent him back.
Bangladesh's interim government has demanded that India send Sheikh Hasina back to Dhaka. Tauheed Hussain, foreign minister in Bangladesh's interim government, said, "We have sent a diplomatic message to the Indian government, asking that she (Hasina) be sent back to Dhaka for judicial process in Bangladesh." Bangladesh is demanding Hasina's extradition from India but it forgot the time when India was demanding the extradition of wanted Anup Chetia. It kept postponing India's demand for nearly 2 decades, but finally, in 2015, Sheikh Hasina's government sent Anup Chetia back to India. Chetia was wanted in India for murder, kidnapping, and extortion cases.
was arrested in 1997
Anup Chetia is a leader of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA). Chetia, also known as Golap Barua, hails from Jerai village in Tinsukia district of Assam. He was arrested on December 21, 1997 in Mohammadpur, Dhaka. But before that, he was arrested in Assam in March 1991, but was later released by the Assam government.
After being arrested by Bangladesh police in December 1997, Chetia sought political asylum in Bangladesh in 2005, 2008 and 2011. But India had been pressuring Bangladesh to deport Chetia for many years.
He was arrested in Dhaka on charges of possessing illegal currency. The Bangladesh court sentenced him to 7 years in prison. After his arrest in 1997, India was demanding the extradition of Chetia from Bangladesh.
Chetiya wanted to come to India
This demand of India was rejected by the Bangladesh government. It said that there is no extradition treaty between the two countries. But Chetia wanted to return to India. In 2013, he wrote a letter to some media houses of Bangladesh saying, the Indian government has repeatedly failed in its attempt to extradite me to India. But now I have decided to go back to Assam on my own initiative.
He said how long can I live in such a state of uncertainty. Chetia had also filed a written application with the Bangladesh government stating his desire to return to India. Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina's government was in power in Bangladesh and India hoped that she would support it in the fight against terrorism.
India's hopes were raised when in December 2013, the Bangladesh government said that it would extradite Chetia. And in November 2015, it handed over Chetia to India.
Married to a Bangladeshi woman
Anup Chetia married a Bangladeshi woman in 2022. Before this, both were in a relationship for several years. Both met while studying in a school in Bangladesh. Anup Chetia is the general secretary of ULFA.
