The ongoing dispute between India and China on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) seems to be coming to an end. China's Defense Ministry said on Thursday that the armies of India and China are "comprehensively and effectively" implementing the agreement to end the deadlock in eastern Ladakh and "steady progress" has been made in this regard. The Indian Defense Ministry also said on this issue that the situation there is "stable" but "sensitive".

Chinese defence spokesman Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang made the remarks during a media briefing in Beijing while responding to a question on the talks held with special representatives on December 18. He said, "At present, the armies of India and China are comprehensively and effectively implementing border-related solutions between the two sides and there has been steady progress in this regard."

An agreement was reached between the two countries in October

He also said that in recent times, based on the important consensus reached between the leaders of the two countries, India and China have maintained close communication on the border situation through diplomatic and military channels and achieved major progress.

Following the October 21 agreement between India and China, Special Border Representative (NSA) Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met and held extensive talks on the implementation of the agreement and reviving relations that had cooled down since the standoff began in April 2020. In October, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in the Russian city of Kazan on the sidelines of the BRICS summit and ratified the October 21 agreement.

Willing to make a concerted effort: Colonel Zhang

Colonel Zhang said that putting India-China relations on the right track serves the fundamental interests of both countries and the two peoples. He further said, "The Chinese military is ready to make concrete efforts with the Indian side to sincerely implement the important consensus reached between the two leaders, conduct more exchanges and interactions, and promote India-China military relations to jointly maintain lasting peace and harmony in the border area."

On the other hand, India has given a positive response in this regard. The Defense Ministry said that the overall situation on the Line of Actual Control is "stable" but "sensitive", there is a broad consensus among the parties to restore the ground situation based on the principles of "equal and mutual security". This statement from the ministry has been given a few weeks after the withdrawal of Indian and Chinese armies from the last two confrontation points in eastern Ladakh.

Situation at LAC is stable but sensitive: Defense Ministry

During the year-end review, the Defence Ministry noted the mutual agreement between the two sides on disengagement on October 21 and said that patrolling has now resumed in the traditional areas in Depsang and Demchok. It said, “The overall situation along the LAC remains stable but sensitive.”

The ministry said, "The exercise involves withdrawal of troops from the confrontation areas of Depsang and Demchok between the two countries, their relocation and subsequent joint verification. At present, the blocking positions have been removed by both sides and the work of joint verification has also been completed. Patrolling has also started in the traditional patrolling areas in Depsang and Demchok." The ministry said that the army has maintained a high state of operational preparedness to ensure stability and dominance on all borders including the LAC and the Line of Control (LoC).
