On one hand, America's newly elected President Donald Trump is preparing to take oath as the President of the country on January 20. On the other hand, he has got a setback from the Supreme Court in the hush money case. The New York court judge had announced that Trump's sentence in the hush money case would be announced on January 10. After this, Trump requested the Supreme Court to stop the sentence, but now he has got a setback from the Supreme Court as well. The court has also refused to stop the sentence.

Donald Trump had appealed to the Supreme Court on Wednesday, January 8, at the last moment before the sentencing. However, the Supreme Court has rejected Trump's appeal to stop the sentence in the hush money case. The newly elected President Trump had urged the apex court to consider whether he is entitled to an automatic stay on his sentence, but the judge has rejected the application 5-4.

The hush money case is a case from the year 2016. In which Trump is allegedly accused of giving money to an adult star. Just before the 2016 presidential election, Trump is accused of giving money to the adult star to keep quiet about his relationship. He has been charged with giving 1 lakh 30 thousand dollars to adult star Stormy Daniels. However, Trump has rejected all the allegations.

The appeal was dismissed 5-4.

Judge Juan Marchan, who is handling this case, has set January 10 as the date to pronounce the sentence on Trump. However, the judge has already indicated that Trump will not be sentenced to jail. Also, he will not impose a fine or probation on him.

The Supreme Court's two conservative judges - John Roberts and Amy Coney Barrett - joined three liberal judges in forming a majority and rejecting Trump's appeal to halt his conviction. The remaining four judges - Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh - had accepted Trump's appeal, but Trump's appeal was rejected with a vote of 5-4.

What did Trump's lawyers argue?

In this case, Trump's lawyers presented an emergency proposal on January 8, in which his lawyers said that imposing a criminal sentence on President-elect Trump before assuming office would be a grave injustice and would interfere with the functioning of the government. Along with this, it was also said that the announcement of the criminal sentence should be delayed.

However, the judge of the New York court has announced to sentence Trump on Friday i.e. 10 January, meanwhile all eyes are fixed on what action the Supreme Court will take in this case, whether the announcement of Trump's punishment will be delayed or his punishment will be announced before taking oath as President on 20 January.
