The year 1971 was the historic year when Bangladesh was formed as an independent country. India played an important role in the formation of Bangladesh. To celebrate this victory day, eight Indian military veterans of Bangladesh's 1971 Liberation War reached Dhaka, while eight Bangladesh Army officers reached Kolkata to participate in the victory day celebrations in both countries.

Both India and Bangladesh celebrate the victory over Pakistan on December 16, 1971, and invite each other's war veterans and serving officers to participate in the celebrations every year. The occasion brings back memories of the Liberation War which marks the shared sacrifices of the armed forces of India and Bangladesh to liberate Bangladesh from occupation, oppression, and mass atrocities.

Dhaka became an independent country.

Bangladesh celebrates its Independence Day on March 26, but Dhaka emerged as the independent capital of an independent country on December 16 after a nine-month Liberation War with Indian assistance. Every year this day is celebrated as Vijay Diwas. These annual bilateral visits provide a platform for Mukti Jodha and Mukti War veterans to celebrate the unique friendship of the two countries, the Indian High Commission said in a statement.

Delegations from both countries arrived.

Bangladesh officials and the Indian High Commission in Dhaka said the delegation comprises two officials from each country who will attend the ceremony in Dhaka and Kolkata. Officials from both countries arrived in Dhaka and Kolkata on Sunday to attend the ceremony.

The Bangladesh delegation includes Mukti Jodha, who was part of the Guerrilla Resistance Force in East Pakistan during the 1971 war and was opposing Pakistani rule there.

There is tension going on between the two countries.

Tension is being seen between India and Bangladesh these days. Victory Day celebrations are being held amidst the tension and delegations from both countries are visiting each other's country. Ever since the coup of former PM Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh, incidents of atrocities on the Hindu community have been coming to the fore. Also, recently ISKCON temple priest Chinmay Krishna Das has also been detained on charges of treason, due to which India has also criticized Bangladesh.

On one hand, cases of atrocities against the Hindu community are constantly coming to light in Bangladesh. On the other hand, the Chief Advisor of the interim government Mohammad Yunus has rejected the case of any kind of communal violence. Bangladesh is a Muslim-majority country, the Hindu community constitutes 8 percent of the country's population.

Tension reduced due to Vikram Misri's visit

A political analyst in Dhaka said, “The visits of the bigwigs to each other's countries are a reminder of the friendship that was forged in 1971. He further said, the one-day visit of Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri along with his counterpart Jasim Uddin to Dhaka on 9 December has partially eased the tension in bilateral relations between the two countries. Vikram Misri also met Advisor Yunus and his de facto foreign minister Tauheed Hussain during his visit.
