Recently a court in America has given a decision that will surprise you. A law was implemented in the country under which only people aged 21 years or above can buy guns, but now the US Appeals Court on Thursday has given a decision against the law that makes it a condition of 21 years of age for young people to buy handguns.

The 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans ruled on Thursday that 18 to 20-year-olds have the same right to keep weapons as adults. Along with this, the court said that keeping the condition of 21 years to buy a gun is a violation of the Second Amendment of the Constitution. A panel of three judges in the conservative 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans gave this decision.

What did the court say?

A case also came up in America in the year 2022 when people approached the court against the age limit for buying guns. At that time, the Supreme Court had ruled to maintain the age limit.

However, now the Court of Appeals has said that people between the ages of 18 and 20 should not be banned from buying guns. The court wrote in its decision, "After all, the Second Amendment includes people between the ages of 18 and 20 whose right to keep and bear arms is protected. Earlier, the appeals court had also upheld the age restriction for buying guns in the year 2012, but now the appeals court has talked about allowing people between the ages of 18 and 20 to buy guns.

People are supporting the removal of the ban.

Along with this, the country's President Trump had made his stand clear regarding the age limit of guns during this year's campaign. He had said that no one will point a finger at your guns (weapons).

Those challenging the ban included the Firearms Policy Coalition, the Second Amendment Foundation, and the Louisiana Shooting Association. These associations supported removing the age limit for buying guns. They said, that if we can trust young people to protect our country, we can certainly trust them to buy guns too.

According to Everytown for Gun Safety, a person must be 21 to buy a handgun from a licensed gun dealer and 18 to buy a long gun from a dealer, according to federal law, according to the Second Amendment Foundation founder, Everytown for Gun Safety. According to the group's research, the minimum age to buy a handgun from unlicensed sellers is 18 and there is no minimum age for long guns.

“It will help in preventing violence”

The Giffords Law Center called the decision reckless and said that age restrictions for buying guns are necessary. It helps prevent violence. Legal director David Pucino said we hope that the existing law will be upheld. The decision has been sent back to the lower court judge for further action.

Earlier, in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, the Supreme Court held that modern gun restrictions should be “in keeping with this country’s historic tradition of firearm regulation.” The ban on people under the age of 21 purchasing guns was first adopted by Congress in 1968 as part of the Crime Control and Safe Streets Act.
