Thailand has given recognition to gay marriage. A law has also been made there regarding this. With this, Thailand has become the first country in Southeast Asia and the third country in Asia to legalize gay marriage. Nepal and Taiwan have already given recognition to it. The Marriage Equality Act has been given legal recognition in the country. This law has come into force in the country from today.

About 300 LGBTQ couples are expected to get married on the first day of the law coming into force. People of the LGBTQ community will get legal status for gay marriage from today. There has been a demand for legalizing gay marriage in Thailand for about 20 years. Now any person aged 18 years or above can marry in the same sex.

Today around 300 couples will get married in Bangkok

A grand ceremony has been organized in a shopping mall in the capital Bangkok today, i.e. Thursday, in which about 300 couples will complete their formalities for gay marriage. In this, all the rights have been given to the partners. The Marriage Equality Act was passed by both the houses of the Parliament. The Parliament also amended the Civil and Commercial Code.

Marriage partners have all rights under the law

Thailand's parliament has amended the code to replace husband and wife with individual and marriage partner. The law has given LGBTQ+ couples all the rights that are available in a normal marriage i.e. husband-wife. LGBTQ couples will have equal rights in legal, financial and medical matters. There will also be joint access to property.

Where is same sex marriage legal and where is it illegal

Today, same-sex marriage is legal in the constitution of 31 countries of the world including France, Germany, Belgium, America. However, there are many countries where it is banned. In 13 countries of the world including Yemen, Iran, Brunei, Nigeria, Qatar, there is still a provision of punishment for those who marry homosexuals. Death penalty is given for this. In India, the Supreme Court had refused to give legal recognition to same-sex marriage.

It is not a crime in these countries, but has not got legal recognition

Apart from this, there are some countries where same sex marriage has not got legal recognition but it is also not considered a crime, these include India, China, Sri Lanka, Britain and Russia.
