History of Opium Cultivation in Afghanistan
Afghanistan's opium cultivation history is years old. In the year 1990, Afghanistan became the largest opium producing country in the world. In 1999, it produced 79 percent of the opium. In 2000, it reached 70 percent. However, after the Taliban government came to power in the year 2021, they banned opium cultivation in 2022. Authorities banned opium cultivation and all narcotics under strict new laws in April 2022.
After the announcement of the ban on cultivation, the prices of opium increased. Due to this, the salary of Afghan farmers cultivating opium more than tripled and increased from $425 million in 2021 to $1.4 billion in 2022. Now the most opium is cultivated in Myanmar in the whole world. According to the UNODC report, even in the year 2024, opium production remained low in the country and 433 tonnes of opium was produced.
