Bangladesh's chief advisor on Thursday made a statement that has left everyone shocked. Mohammad Yunus called the country's high growth rate during former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's tenure fake and also accused the world of not raising questions about her 'corruption'.

Hasina's 15 years in power have been credited with transforming the economy and the country's vast textile industry, though critics have accused her of violating human rights and stifling free expression and dissent. Now Mohammad Yunus has questioned that very development.

The whole world was held responsible.

In an interview with Reuters during the World Economic Forum's annual meeting at a Swiss Alpine resort, Yunus said that our growth rate was ahead of everyone else, this is a completely fake growth rate. He said, "She (Sheikh Hasina) was telling everyone in Davos how the country is run. No one questioned it, this is not a good world order at all. The whole world is responsible for making this possible."

Economist and 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohammad Yunus has made these allegations without giving any data or reasoning. After which it is understood that he is venting his anger on Sheikh Hasina. Because Yunus has failed so far in bringing the country's economy back on track and now he has started calling the good economy in Hasina government as wrong.

Bangladesh economy during Sheikh Hasina's tenure

In the financial year 2017/18, Bangladesh's annual growth rate was around 8 percent, whereas when Hasina took power in 2009, it was only around 5 percent. However, it declined due to the impact of COVID-19 and the Ukraine war. In 2023, the World Bank declared Bangladesh as one of the fastest growing economies in the world, after which Sheikh Hasina started getting praise all over the world.
