SAARC should be activated… Pakistan-Bangladesh are making efforts together, and India is emphasizing BIMSTEC.
Bangladesh's interim government's Prime Minister Mohammad Yunus is trying to reactivate the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) by meeting Pakistan. Mohammad Yunus has discussed the SAARC issue during his meeting with Pakistan PM Shahbaz Sharif. Now Nepal's Chief Minister Oli has also discussed the matter with Pakistani Ambassador Hashmi.
This is happening at a time when India's focus is on BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation), an organization connecting South Asia and South East Asia. Earlier, Pakistani PM Shahbaz and Bangladeshi PM Yunus met. Now Nepal's PM Oli has also discussed this with Pakistani Ambassador Hashmi.
According to media reports, PM Oli stressed that Nepal, as the SAARC Chair, is making efforts to activate the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), and said that SAARC member countries should play a constructive role in this.
Saying that regional organisations like SAARC should not be adversely affected even if there is any problem between any two countries, Prime Minister Oli said Nepal is expanding its relations and cooperating with friendly and neighbouring countries.
Source is currently inactive
SAARC is currently inactive due to Pakistan's obstinacy on initiatives proposed by India and its refusal to take action against cross-border terrorism.
Let us tell you that during the 18th summit of the eight-nation group in Kathmandu in November 2014, SAARC was about to finalize two agreements - Regional Railway Agreement and Motor Vehicle Agreement for passenger and cargo traffic. The then Nawaz Sharif government of Pakistan had stopped the proposals under pressure from the army.
