aaRussian Missile Attack on Children's Hospital: Russian missiles attacked several cities in Ukraine on Monday. The attack caused heavy damage to the country's largest children's hospital and other buildings, according to AP. Officials said at least 31 people were killed. President Volodymyr Zelensky said on social media that more than 40 different types of missiles targeted five Ukrainian cities in the daytime attack. Ukraine's air force said it intercepted 30 missiles. More than 150 people were injured. Russia denied attacking the hospital. It said the attacks were carried out on military targets.

It was the heaviest bombing by Russia on Kyiv in nearly four months, targeting seven of the city's 10 districts. At least seven people were killed in the capital, including two hospital staff. 10 people were killed in attacks in Kryvyi Rih, Zelensky's birthplace in central Ukraine.

The attack on the Okhmatdyt Children's hospital caused chaos

. Health Minister Viktor Lyashko said that at the time of the attack, three heart operations were being performed, with debris from the explosion contaminating the patients' open chests. The hospital ran out of water, light, and oxygen, and patients were transferred to other hospitals.

A few hours after the initial attack, another air raid siren forced many of them to flee to the hospital shelter. Moving by torchlight through the shelter's dark corridors, mothers carried their bandaged babies in their arms, and medical workers carried other patients on gurneys. Volunteers handed out candy to try to calm the children.

Children suffering from cancer were brought out.

Marina Ploskonos said that her 4-year-old son had undergone spinal surgery on Friday. She burst into tears and said, 'My child is scared. This should not happen. This is a children's hospital.'

UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Turk said, 'The victims included some of Ukraine's sickest children.' He said that a UN team visited the hospital soon after the attack and saw children being treated for cancer on beds set up outside the hospital.

"This is disgusting, and I urge those with influence to do everything in their power to stop these attacks immediately," Turk said.

The attack came a day before a

three-day NATO summit was to begin in Washington to consider how they could reassure Kiev of the alliance's unwavering support and give Ukrainians hope that their country could avoid Europe's biggest conflict since World War II.

Zelensky said during a visit to Poland that he hoped the summit would deliver more air defense systems for Ukraine.

US response

In a statement, US President Joe Biden called Monday's missile attacks "a horrific reminder of Russia's brutality." "It is vital that the world stands with Ukraine at this crucial moment and that we do not ignore Russian aggression," the statement said.
