The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Wednesday wrote a letter to British High Commissioner Jane Marriott, appealing to the United Kingdom to correct its past mistakes. According to media reports, the letter was sent by the Registrar of the Supreme Court on the instructions of Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa. The Supreme Court said that High Commissioner Marriott spoke about democracy at the Asma Jahangir Conference held recently in Lahore, highlighting that Britain should learn from the book of the Supreme Court of Pakistan which had corrected its mistakes.

The letter said that the Supreme Court of Pakistan has mentioned its mistakes, and it is important that Britain also admits its mistakes and corrects them. It said, let us be honest and admit past mistakes with a spirit of openness.

Recognize past mistakes

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has recognized its past mistakes, addressed them in detail, and taken steps to ensure that they are not repeated. The Supreme Court called for moving away from the racial superiority of colonialism. The letter urged that let us all stand up for equality, peace, and humanity. The letter highlighted High Commissioner Marriott's speech at the Asma Jahangir Conference, where the British diplomat emphasized the importance of democracy and elections. The letter said that the interest shown by the British government is welcome.

Announcement of election date

The letter said that it also mentioned that the elections in Pakistan were delayed by more than 90 days as the President and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) could not agree on who has the authority to announce the date of elections. It said that the Supreme Court resolved the matter within 12 days and general elections were held across Pakistan on February 8, 2024.

Mistreatment of people

It was written in the end that the government of King Charles III emphasized the need for open society and democracy. We express our sincere hopes and best wishes for the openness and democratic aspirations of the people of your country. The letter urged Britain to reconsider its mistakes but failed to mention the terrible mistakes made by the British Empire in undivided India when it committed crimes like the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and systematic mistreatment of the local people.
