The picture of relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan is changing, after 13 years the Foreign Minister of Pakistan is going to visit Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina's government ruled Bangladesh for a long time, Sheikh Hasina repeatedly asked Pakistan to publicly apologize for the atrocities committed during the liberation of 1971, but this demand was not fulfilled, after the coup in the country, the political picture now seems to be changing.
Pakistan and Bangladesh are extending a hand of friendship towards each other. Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said, Bangladesh is Pakistan's lost brother and his visit to Dhaka next month will be "important". Earlier in 2012, Pakistan's Foreign Minister had visited Bangladesh.
Which issues will be discussed?
Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will be visiting Bangladesh next month. Chief Advisor of Bangladesh's interim government Mohammad Yunus had invited Pakistan's Foreign Minister to visit Pakistan during the D-8 summit. Due to this, he is going to visit the country after 13 years. Regarding the visit to Bangladesh, Ishaq Dar said that during this visit we will work for support and cooperation in the economy of both the countries. Things are moving fast on these issues.
Initiatives to strengthen bilateral relations
Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Bangladesh interim government chief Muhammad Yunus met on 19 December during the D-8 summit held in Egypt. During this, both agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation in all areas of mutual interest. Their meeting also gave rise to new diplomatic discussions.
On the sidelines of the summit, Yunus had urged Pakistan PM Shahbaz Sharif to resolve the 1971 issues to help Bangladesh move forward with its relations with Pakistan. "Issues have been coming up again and again, let's resolve those issues to move forward," Yunus had told the Pakistan PM.
Shahbaz Sharif had said during this time that things were resolved by the trilateral agreement involving Bangladesh, Pakistan and India in 1974, but if there are other pending issues, he would be happy to look into them.
Bangladesh-Pakistan relations are changing
On one hand, after 13 years, Pakistan's Foreign Minister is going to visit Bangladesh and the top leaders of both the countries are talking about bilateral talks and relations. On the other hand, during the government of former PM Sheikh Hasina, these relations were not like this. Sheikh Hasina held the post of PM from 2008 to August 2024. There was tension in the relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh during Sheikh Hasina's rule, but after the coup in the country in August, the political picture changed and efforts are being seen from both the countries to strengthen the relations again.
