Oxford University's debating society Oxford Union organised a debate on Kashmir, after which the controversy has escalated. Students of Indian origin raised slogans against the President of Oxford Union Ibrahim Osman Mowafi. This controversy has created a lot of anger not only among Indian students but also among the British-Hindu community and people of Indian origin. Indian students protested outside the Oxford Union against calling Kashmir 'independent' in this debate. They raised slogans like Jammu Kashmir was of India, Jammu Kashmir is India and Jammu Kashmir will remain India.

Insight UK, an organization working for the rights of the Indian and British-Hindu community in Britain, has also written a letter to the Oxford Union. In this letter, serious objections have been raised on the topic of the debate and the selection of speakers. Insight UK says that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and any debate raising questions on it will directly hurt India's sovereignty.

A letter written regarding the issue

Insight UK, a social movement representing British Hindus and Indians, wrote a letter to the Oxford Union Society on Thursday expressing concern over this. The letter also raised objections to two speakers invited by the Oxford Union, including Mazammil Ayyub Thakur and Zafar Khan. According to the letter, Mazammil Ayyub Thakur is accused of hate speech and having links with terrorist organizations. Zafar Khan, on the other hand, is a representative of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front. He is accused of adopting a violent attitude that terrorized Kashmiri Hindus and forced them to flee their ancestral homes.

After this event of Oxford Union, the British-Hindu community and Indian students have called it an insult to Indian sovereignty and the sentiments of the community and have raised questions on organizing such a debate.

Impact on India UK relations

Indians living in London are angry about this debate that took place in the Oxford Union. Indian students have also protested outside the Oxford Union.
