Another major incident of brutality against minorities has come to light in Bangladesh. 17 houses of Christian Tripura community were burnt on Christmas Day in Bandarban. After setting the houses on fire, the miscreants fled. This incident of arson took place at Notun Tongjhiri Tripura Para of Sarai Union of Lama Upazila at around 12:30 pm. Actually, the miscreants set those houses on fire when people had gone to another village to celebrate Christmas, as there was no church in their area. The press wing of the Chief Advisor strongly condemned the incident of arson on the houses of the Tripura community.
17 houses burnt to ashes
Locals said that out of 19 houses of the Tripura community, 17 were burnt to ashes. They said that people of the Tripura community had been living in this area for a long time. But a few years ago people forcibly evicted them. They claimed that this area was leased to the wife of a police officer during the rule of the Awami League. After this, they planted trees in the village.
What did the victims say?
Paisapr Tripura, the head of Notun Tongjhiri Para, said that we have been living here for three-four generations. A group of people calling themselves 'SP's men' evicted us four-five years ago. At the same time, victim Gungamani Tripura said that our houses have been completely burnt to ashes. We could not save anything. Locals said that Benazir Ahmed was the Inspector General of Police at that time. He had leased the area in the name of his wife. After the fall of the Awami League regime, the residents returned and started living in newly built houses there.
