Life in Russia did not suit her! Bashar al-Assad's wife asked for divorce.
Asma Assad, wife of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has filed for divorce in a Russian court. Several reports in Turkish and Arab media have said that Asma is not happy in the Russian capital and wants to go to Britain.
According to reports, Asma has sought divorce from the Russian court and permission to leave Moscow. Russian officials are looking into Asma's application. Asma has citizenship in both Syria and Britain. Asma met Assad during her studies in London and both got married in the year 2000.
Asma Assad is a leukemia patient.
According to a Reuters report, Asma al-Assad was diagnosed with leukemia in May this year. This happened almost 5 years after she recovered from breast cancer. There are reports that Assad has been placed under heavy restrictions in Russia, despite Russian authorities accepting her asylum request. The authorities have reportedly not allowed Assad to participate in political activities and leave Moscow.
Reports of Assad's property being confiscated
A report in Israel's Jerusalem Post newspaper said Russia has also seized Assad's assets, including gold, $2 billion, and several apartments in Moscow. The report suggests Assad's brother Maher al-Assad has not received asylum in Russia as his request is still being considered. Russian authorities have reportedly placed Maher and his family under house arrest.
The overthrow of Bashar al-Assad
Bashar al-Assad was ousted in early December by Syrian rebels led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which the US has designated as a terrorist organization. US officials have indicated they will lift a $10 million bounty on HTS chief Abu Mohammad al-Julani.
