Is UAE fuelling civil war in a country where Gaza-like devastation has occurred?
There is a war going on in many parts of the world right now. Ukraine and Russia have been fighting each other for about 3 years and Israel's attacks have been going on in Gaza for the last 11 months. It is often alleged that powerful Western countries like America and Britain fuel wars in other countries for their benefit. This has been seen in countries like Syria, Libya, Iraq, and Afghanistan, but the picture is different in the African country Sudan. The name of the Arab country UAE has come to the fore fueling the civil war that has been going on in Sudan for the last 17 months.
The Sudanese government on Wednesday accused the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of supplying weapons, missiles, and ammunition to Sudan's paramilitary force Rapid Support Forces (RSF), prolonging the war that has been going on since 2023.
The Sudanese government made these allegations after the meeting of the United Nations Security Council, where 15 members of the Council extended the arms embargo on Sudan's Western Darfur region till September 12, 2025.
Sudan has been fighting for the past 17 months between the country's army and paramilitary forces. Sudan's ambassador Al-Harith Mohammed alleged that the UAE is supplying large quantities of weapons to the RSF. As evidence, he cited a recent shipment of weapons sent to the RSF via Chad. Al-Harith said that while the Chadian border has been reopened for humanitarian aid, the Adre border is being used to deliver weapons to the RSF.
greed for gold
He also claimed that the European bullion market has revealed that the UAE is profiting from Sudanese gold. Sudan has previously accused the UAE of illegally smuggling Sudanese gold amid the war. Ambassador Al-Harith Mohammed has called on the United Nations to impose sanctions against the RAF and countries supporting it.
UAE rejected the allegations
The UAE called these allegations completely 'false and absurd' and said that the Sudan government is retreating from peace talks. UAE Ambassador Mohammed Abu-Shahab said that the Sudanese army lacks political courage and has used food as a weapon of war.
He said that Sudan's army should participate in the peace talks. Sudan's army did not participate in the peace talks held in Geneva last month. Sudan's army chief Abdel Fateh al-Burhan had said that he would fight for 100 years and said that the Geneva talks were a cover-up for the crimes of the RSF and its allies.
Worse situation due to war in Sudan
The conflict between the army and paramilitary forces in Sudan over power began in April 2023. In which countries like UAE, Libyan Army, Wagner Group, Chad, and Egypt also became active for their interests. This war has caused great loss to the common citizens of Sudan and the situation remains pathetic. More than 13 million people have been displaced from their homes and the humanitarian crisis is deepening. The Chief of the World Health Organization said on Sunday that more than 20 thousand people have died in this war. That is, while 40 thousands deaths have occurred due to Israeli attacks in Gaza, 20 thousand deaths have occurred due to civil war in Sudan. The crisis of starvation is more horrific here than in Gaza.
The UN reported in July that 25.6 million people were facing food shortages and food was scarce in camps for displaced people. While some countries and organizations called for an arms embargo across Sudan, Britain's deputy ambassador James Kariuki told the council: "Countries should avoid adding strength to any party to the conflict and should play their part in facilitating peace talks between the two sides."
