Although this bill has been passed by the lower house, its path is not easy because, during the voting of the bill, protests were seen both inside and outside the Parliament. Those opposing the bill said that people can misuse it. With the help of the bill, people can be pressured to die. However, this bill is yet to be passed in the upper house.

What is the provision in the bill?

According to the provision made in the bill, the benefit of this bill can be availed by people above 18 years of age and those who are going to die in the next 6 months. The decision of a person suffering from a serious illness to end his life will require the approval of two doctors, after which permission will be required from the judges of the High Court. Apart from this, it will be confirmed by two doctors whether the person is in this condition or not, and the court will make the final decision about it.

This entire process can take one to two weeks. If someone is near death or is in great pain, a decision can be taken within 48 hours. If someone forces a person to commit suicide, he can be sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Leadbeater, who introduced the bill, said in her speech to the House, "Let's be clear, we're not talking about a choice between life or death, we're talking about giving dying people a choice about how they die." She acknowledged that this is not an easy decision for lawmakers, but if any of us want an easy life, they're in the wrong place.

Danny Kruger opposed this bill. He said that Parliament could do better for the terminally ill than commit suicide. The role of members of Parliament is to provide safeguards for the most vulnerable people. He said, we are the protectors. Parliament is the place where we do our best to protect the most vulnerable people in society from harm. Despite this, we are standing on the verge of abandoning that role.

Other countries that have legalized assisted suicide include Australia, Belgium, Canada, and parts of the US, with rules varying by jurisdiction. More than 500 British people have ended their lives in Switzerland, where the law allows assisted dying for non-residents.

The Netherlands was the first country to legalize euthanasia, which differs from the euthanasia legalized in the Netherlands and Canada, in which a health care practitioner, at the patient's request, injects a substance to cause death under specific circumstances.
