Sheinbaum, who is going to become the country's first female president, is a scientist, engineer and former mayor of Mexico City. Sheinbaum is considered close to current President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. She is greatly influenced by his populist ideology and has promised to carry forward his populist policies during the election campaign.

The other female candidate contesting against Sheinbaum was Xochitl Galvez, a businesswoman and former senator, who came in second place. The third male candidate, Jorge Alvarez, came in third.
