The Soviet Union may have disintegrated, but Putin still has influence over those parts that were once part of the Union. This is the reason for internal conflict in these countries. One side is attracted towards Europe, while the other is attracted towards Russia. This is also the reason for the conflict that started in Georgia during the election process. Now this conflict is moving towards civil war. How did the situation deteriorate so much?

What people did not want happened and a new round of protests began in Georgia. The fire of rebellion has been raging on the streets of Georgia's capital Tbilisi for more than a month. This rebellion is against the new government. The protests have been further fuelled by the presidential elections.

Why did the flames of protests rage on the land of Georgia? How did Georgia change completely in one election? We will tell you the answers to all these questions but first, understand the role of this protest.

Changes in the election process

The newly elected President of Georgia is Mikhail Kvelashvili. His election process changed the history of Georgia. This is the first time that a President in Georgia has been elected by the Electoral College and not by direct vote. Keeping this apprehension in mind, protests had started before the election process. But the question is why is this happening?

Why is the violence happening?

In Georgia, the Georgian Dream party is pro-Putin. In the elections held in February, Irakli Ko Bakhidze of the Georgian Dream party was elected prime minister. But Georgia's other party, The Way of Georgia, is pro-Europe and Salome Zourabichvili of this party has been the president since 2018. Now instead of direct voting, the electoral college has elected Mikhail Kavelashvili of the Georgian Dream party as the new president, ending Georgia's hopes of joining the European Union.

Georgia's Dark Chapter

Keeping this apprehension in mind, EU supporters started protesting in Tbilisi regarding the presidential election process. After the election of the new president, the protesters have become angry, which means that this situation seems to be beneficial for Russia. That is why Putin's opponents are calling this election process a dark chapter for Georgia, while the Electoral College is also calling the presidential election held through the new process transparent.

Elaborating on this process, it has been said that only a person who gets 200 out of 300 votes can become the President in Georgia. Apart from this, it has also been made mandatory to cast more than 170 votes out of 300 MPs representing the College of Electors and Kavelashvili has got 244 votes out of 300.

Membership of the European Union became the reason

Now questions have been raised on the process of presidential election, the reason behind which is membership of European Union. The opposition parties of the former ruling party had taken steps regarding this, but now the new party has taken back these steps. That is why Georgia is burning.
