For causing inconvenience…. after imposing martial law in South Korea, the President apologized.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol on Saturday apologized to the nation for imposing martial law and said he was ready to accept any legal consequences of a parliamentary vote on his impeachment by Peshek Ki.
In South Korea, recently, on Tuesday night, President Yoon Suk-Yol announced the imposition of martial law. However, after protests broke out in the country, the martial law was repealed within 6 hours.
The President apologized to the whole country.
While addressing the nation on TV, the President first expressed regret for causing public anxiety and inconvenience in the country. Along with this, he vowed that he would never impose martial law again. President Yoon Suk-Yol further said that his political future will be decided by the People's Power Party (PPP). He also said that he is ready to face any legal or political consequences for his actions.
PPP leader demanded the resignation
Soon after the president apologized for imposing martial law, PPP party leader Han Dong-hun demanded the resignation of President Yoon Suk-yeol, saying he was no longer fit to serve as president. Opposition lawmakers filed an impeachment motion in response, but it is not yet clear whether they will be able to secure a two-thirds majority for impeachment.
A two-thirds majority is required for the impeachment of the President in the country. While the opposition has 192 out of 300 seats in the Parliament. Due to this, the opposition needs 8 votes from the PPP party to pass the impeachment. However, on Wednesday, 18 PPP members voted to lift the martial law.
Due to the imposition of martial law by the President, protests started taking place all over the country and the system collapsed. While on one hand the PPP party leader Han has demanded the resignation of the President, on the other hand the PPP also voted against impeachment during a parliamentary meeting.
Han made several claims against the president
Han on Friday urged the immediate suspension of President Yoon Suk-yeol's powers, warning that he posed a serious threat to national security. Han also claimed that during martial law, Yoon had ordered the arrest of senior lawmakers, including himself, opposition leader Lee Jae-myung and National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik.
Han said that Yoon had instructed the country's intelligence commander to detain politicians on charges of "anti-state activities." Due to this, the Defense Ministry in the country has now suspended several key officials, including Defense Counter-Intelligence Commander Yeo In-hyung. Yoon's former Defense Minister, Kim Yong Hyun, who is suspected of urging the declaration of martial law, is being investigated on charges of rebellion.
Why was martial law imposed?
President Yun had imposed martial law in the country saying that this step was necessary to protect the country from North Korea's communist forces and anti-national elements. He also said that this decision was taken to protect the country's independence and democratic structure. After the martial law was imposed, the citizens of the country protested and raised their voice against it.
