Entering Lebanon and attacking is not as easy as attacking Gaza, two powerful Western countries stand in the way of Israel.
The Israel-Hezbollah tension that has been going on for about 11 months has taken a new turn. The pager attack last week and now the major attacks by Israel in Lebanon have raised concerns around the world. Hundreds of civilians have died in the recent Israeli strikes in Lebanon, after which France has appealed for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council to discuss the situation in Lebanon. On the other hand, America has also protested against the ground invasion action.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot told the United Nations General Assembly on Monday, "I have appealed for an emergency meeting of the Security Council on Lebanon to be held this week." He also called on all parties to avoid conflict, Barrot said that war would be disastrous for everyone, especially for Lebanese citizens. Apart from this, the US has also opposed the Israeli attack on Lebanon.
This is not the first time that a meeting has been called in the United Nations after the Israeli attacks. Meetings have been called several times in Gaza, but Israeli action has not been curbed. It will not be easy for Israel to ignore France's voice on the Lebanon issue, because France is a NATO country and has veto power in the United Nations.
America is also worried after the attacks in Lebanon.
The United States is considering concrete ideas to de-escalate the crisis in Lebanon, a US official said on Monday, as it opposes Israel's ground invasion to target Hezbollah.
"We have some concrete ideas that we're going to be discussing with allies and partners this week to figure out a way forward," the US official said as world leaders arrived in New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
France is an old partner of Lebanon.
This is not the first time that France has come forward during a crisis in Lebanon. France also helped Lebanon during the ammonium nitrate explosion in Beirut, Lebanon in 2020. After the pager attack on September 20, French President Emmanuel Macron personally contacted the prominent leaders of Lebanon.
In fact, before independence, Lebanon was under French occupation. Lebanon's religion-based parliamentary system is also a gift from France. France has ruled Lebanon for many decades, which is why it feels a responsibility towards it. There are deep cultural, political, and economic ties between the two countries.
Apart from this, the French language and culture have a great influence on Lebanon. The people of Lebanon not only speak French but also study in French educational institutions, so peace and stability in Lebanon are considered very important to France. This is the reason why whenever there is any trouble in Lebanon, France becomes active.
