Electric cars have created a buzz in this country, 9 out of 10 people have EVs… the target for 2025 is huge
Leaving petrol and diesel vehicles, many countries of the world are now showing more interest in electric vehicles. This is the reason why in many countries people are now seen shifting towards electric vehicles instead of petrol and diesel vehicles.
Electric cars have made a splash in the European country Norway. The Norwegian Road Federation (OFV) released a report on Thursday, according to which there has been a surge in electric car sales in the country. While 82.4 percent of EVs were purchased in the year 2023, 88.9 percent of electric cars were purchased in 2024.
9 out of 10 people have EV
In the year 2024, 9 out of 10 people bought an electric vehicle. While the trend towards electric vehicles has increased in the country, it has also benefited the environment. This is another milestone in the country's transformation towards zero-emission vehicles.
According to a recent report in the country, the number of cars purchased in the country increased by 1.4 percent in the year 2024 as compared to 2023. 1 lakh 28 thousand 691 cars were purchased in 2024. Out of the vehicles purchased in 2024, 1 lakh 14 thousand 400 were electric vehicles. The country's shift towards electric vehicles has brought its zero-emission goal of 2025 closer to completion.
OFV director Oyvind Solberg Thorsen said in a press conference, "We have not yet achieved the 2025 target, but no other country has been able to reach as much as Norway has." He also said, "The sale of electric cars has increased rapidly. But now to achieve the full 10 percent, its sales will have to be maintained in the same way."
Which brand sold the most?
In the year 2024, the most well-known brands dominated the Norwegian market, with Tesla selling up to 18.9 percent, followed by Volkswagen and Toyota, Volvo, and BMW. Along with this, people's inclination towards Chinese electric car brands has also increased. Sales of brands like MG, BYD, Polestar, and Xpeng have seen an increase. Chinese brands have also been included in the top 15 brands sold in the country in the year 2024.
How Norway made the electric vehicle shift
Norway has been working towards zero-emission vehicles since 2016. In 2016, the country set a target to completely phase out the sale of petrol-diesel vehicles by 2025. To achieve this, Norway implemented many things to shift people towards electric vehicles including tax exemption, low toll, free parking and subsidized charging. In September 2024, OFV reported that Norway has become the first country where the number of electric cars on the road has exceeded petrol-diesel vehicles.
