Delhi: Amid controversy, India summons Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner

Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry on Sunday summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma and expressed concern over India's activities on the border. On Monday, the Indian Foreign Ministry also summoned Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner Nurul Islam in New Delhi. According to reports, India summoned the top Bangladeshi diplomat in New Delhi after not getting cooperation from the interim government of Bangladesh on the issue of fencing the India-Bangladesh border.
Amid the ongoing border dispute between the two countries, Bangladesh had a meeting with Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma for about 30 minutes yesterday. In this meeting, Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Mohammad Jashim Uddin clearly put forward his concerns regarding border fencing.
After the fall of Sheikh Hasina, the distance in relations between India and Bangladesh is increasing. Bangladesh is constantly increasing its proximity with Pakistan and the attitude of the new government has been against India. Due to security reasons, India is fencing at many places on the border with Bangladesh.
A day after, Bangladesh summoned the Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma in Dhaka on Sunday to express its "deep concern" over recent border clashes of the Border Security Force (BSF), India also summoned Bangladeshi diplomat in Delhi today.

Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Mohammad Jashim has objected to the work of installing a border fence on the Bangladesh border with India. Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam, Advisor to the Home Ministry of Bangladesh, said that the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has failed to install the fence due to opposition from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local residents. He also alleged that due to some agreements made during the tenure of the previous government, there have been tensions between India and Bangladesh on many border-related issues.
