CPJ Report: The year 2024 was the deadliest for journalists, murders took place from India to Pakistan

The year 2024 has been the bloodiest year for journalists. The report released by CPJ states that at least 124 journalists were killed in conflicts last year, of which 75 percent were killed in Israeli attacks alone. According to CPJ, the number of journalists killed in 2014 was 22 percent higher than in 2023, this figure shows the increasing level of international conflict, political unrest, and crime around the world.

 

CPJ has been collecting data on incidents against journalists for 30 years, and this year has been the deadliest. CPJ's report states that journalists and media workers have been killed in 18 countries. According to CPJ, a total of 85 journalists were killed in the Gaza war and all were killed in Israeli army shelling, it also states that 82 out of 85 media workers were Palestinians.

 

Journalists were also killed in Sudan and Pakistan.

Sudan and Pakistan are in second place in terms of murder of journalists and media workers, where six journalists and media workers have been killed each. After this, five journalists have been killed in Mexico, which is considered one of the most dangerous countries for journalists. At the same time, two journalists have also been killed in the violence-hit country Haiti.

Apart from this, other deaths have been reported in Myanmar, Mozambique, India, and Iraq in the report, and the year 2024 has been described as the most dangerous for journalists.

Journalists are not safe even in 2025

The CPJ has tracked the deaths of journalists since 1992 and in its 2024 report, 24 journalists were intentionally killed as a result of their work. The report also said that freelancers are the most vulnerable due to a lack of resources, with 43 deaths in 2024.

According to CPJ, the new year 2025 is also not looking very good for media personnel, as 6 journalists have been killed in the last week itself.
