Pakistan's Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) on Friday launched Pakistan's first indigenous electro-optical (EO-1) satellite from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northern China. Pakistan has named it PRSC-EO1. This satellite will use electro-optical sensors to collect data and images of the Earth's surface by detecting and measuring reflected sunlight or emitted radiation.

The PRSC-EO1 satellite will enhance Pakistan's ability to monitor and manage natural resources, respond to disasters, and improve urban planning and agricultural development, SUPARCO said in a statement.

“This remarkable milestone is a giant leap in Pakistan’s journey towards self-reliance and technological excellence in space exploration,” the agency said.

SUPARCO Chairman Muhammad Yusuf Khan expressed gratitude for the government's "unwavering support" and acknowledged the hard work and dedication of the agency's engineers, stressing that the launch reflects "Pakistan's commitment to leverage space technology for national progress and sustainable development".

What information will PRSC-EO1 provide?

Agriculture: Supporting precision farming, irrigation management, and crop yield prediction.

Urban planning: overseeing infrastructure development and assisting in the management of urban sprawl.

Environmental management: monitoring deforestation, glacier depletion, and water resources.

Disaster Management: Providing timely updates on floods, landslides, and earthquakes for effective response.

Additionally, Suparco said the satellite will also help in the monitoring and conservation of natural resources including minerals, oil, and gas reserves.

The first indigenous electro-optical (EO-1) satellite was launched.

The successful launch represents a significant step in Pakistan's journey towards space technology excellence and reinforces SUPARCO's role as a major contributor to the country's socio-economic development through innovative space solutions, the agency said.

China's Long March-2D carrier rocket also launched PRSC-EO1 along with two other satellites, Tianlu-1 and Blue Carbon 1, into orbit today, China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation said in a statement.

Pakistan's PM said- this is a proud moment.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said in a statement, "Under the leadership of Suparco, this reflects our country's growing capabilities in space science and technology." He said it was a "proud moment" for the entire country. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar called the successful launch an "important milestone" in Pakistan's space journey.

“The launch of the indigenously built EO satellite is a testimony to SUPARCO’s expertise and the commitment of the Government of Pakistan to advance space technology for peaceful purposes,” he said in a post on X. The Inter-Services Public Relations described it as an “important milestone”.

In May last year, Pakistan launched a multi-mission communications satellite, PAKSat-MM1, to improve internet and communications infrastructure. It was jointly developed by SUPARCO and China Great Wall Industry Corporation.

Suparco also joined a lunar exploration mission in November, partnering with China's Chang'e 8 mission, which is scheduled to launch in 2028.
