A proposal has been sent by the Constitution Reform Commission in Bangladesh to change several principles. According to this proposal, there is talk of changing the state principles of secularism, socialism, and nationalism. The Constitution Reform Commission submitted its report to the head of the interim government of the country, Mohammad Yunus.

The commission formed by the interim government after Sheikh Hasina resigned as Prime Minister due to the nationwide movement led by students in Bangladesh included the proposal for a bicameral parliament for the country and limiting the tenure of the Prime Minister to two terms. These three principles are included in the state policy in the Constitution of Bangladesh. These are one of the four principles established as the fundamental principles of state policy. According to the new proposals in the Constitution Reform Commission, only the word democracy has not been changed.

Making changes as per the wishes of the people

Commission Chairman Ali Riyaz said that we want to work on the great ideals of the 1971 Liberation War. Also, keeping in mind the aspirations of the people during their movement in 2024, a proposal has been sent for five state principles - equality, human dignity, social justice, and pluralism.

In a statement to the media, Chief Advisor Riaz said that the commission has recommended the formation of a two-house parliament in which the lower house will be named National Assembly and the upper house will be named Senate. It will have 105 and 400 seats respectively.

Also, the proposal sent suggests that the tenure of both the proposed houses will be four years instead of the current five-year term of the Parliament. The lower house should be decided on the basis of majority and the upper house on the basis of proportional representation.
