Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau fell into a pit while being hostile towards India, and may have to resign within 48 hours.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may resign as leader of the Liberal Party on Monday, The Globe and Mail reported on Sunday, citing sources. This is happening when 53-year-old Trudeau is reportedly losing support within his party and many surveys indicate that if elections were held today, the Conservative Party led by Pierre Poilievre would oust him and the Liberal Party from power.
The Globe and Mail reported that Trudeau's resignation will come ahead of a crucial national caucus meeting on Wednesday. A source told the publication that the Canadian PM 'understands he has to make an announcement before he meets the Liberal caucus so that it does not look like he has been ousted by his own MPs.' It is not clear who will replace Trudeau, and there is no clarity on whether he will remain as Prime Minister until a new leader is elected.
Pressure building within his own party
Trudeau, who has taken an anti-India stance, is getting cornered in his own country. Trudeau was under pressure from his party MPs to resign for months. This pressure increased further when his Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned on December 16 saying that there were differences between her and the Prime Minister on policy issues.
A new appointment will be made on the recommendation of the caucus.
Just last week, several local media outlets reported that Justin Trudeau's team was considering options for how he could remain prime minister even if he was removed from the post of Liberal leader. The party would have to appoint an interim leader on the recommendation of the national caucus or hold a vote, after which the Liberal Party would get a new leader.
