Relations between Canada and India are continuously deteriorating. Officials of the Indian Consulate in Vancouver recently informed that they were told by the Canadian government that their audio-video surveillance was being done. Their private conversations were also being listened to. This information was given by the central government in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. India has strongly protested against this, as it is a violation of all diplomatic provisions.

Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh also said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, "Respect for each other's concerns, territorial integrity and sovereignty is essential for stable bilateral relations. The Government of India lodged a strong protest with the Canadian High Commission in New Delhi on this issue on 2 November 2024, as these actions were a gross violation of all diplomatic provisions."

What is the stand of the Indian Government?

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs said that by citing technology, the Canadian government cannot justify the fact that it is involved in harassment and intimidation. Our diplomats and consular personnel are already working in an environment of extremism and violence.

He further said in the weekly media briefing that this step by the Canadian government is against diplomatic standards and worsens the situation. This action by the Canadian government worsens the situation, and is wrong with established diplomatic norms and practices.

Demand to stop violent incidents

On the question of security of Indian diplomats in Canada, the Minister of State said, the Government of India is constantly engaged with the Canadian side to ensure that our diplomatic personnel and assets are provided adequate security at all times. India has also requested Canada to take effective steps to stop the ongoing threats and violent incidents against Indian leaders and diplomats.

Expressed inability to protect diplomats

Giving information on relations with Canada, the Minister of State for Home Affairs said that the Canadian government has recently expressed its inability to protect Indian diplomats and commercial properties in Canada. Apart from this, Canada has stopped the supply of consular and passport services to Indian diplomats, due to which Indian citizens are facing difficulties.

Why is the dispute between the two countries increasing

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had alleged that Indian agents had a possible hand in the murder of Khalistan supporter Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India had completely rejected these allegations. Since these allegations were made, the relations between the two countries are getting sour day by day
