At this time, winter is at its peak in Asian countries. The minimum temperature of India's capital Delhi has reached about 4 degrees. Tension-ridden Iran is also facing a bad situation due to the cold at this time, the country's energy crisis has made it worse. In Iran, officials announced a widespread closure of schools, universities, and government offices on Tuesday. This has been done to reduce electricity consumption.

Although this announcement has been made for the whole country, the southern region of Iran is less affected by the crisis because the temperature here is a little warmer. This crisis has come after power cuts across the country in summer, Iran's power generation is not increasing and the increasing demand has worsened the situation.

Now with the winter temperatures dropping in the north and west, the government seems to be failing to provide electricity to millions of citizens. On the other hand, pollution along with heavy rain and snowfall has also increased the trouble of the citizens.

President's appeal

Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has called on the citizens of Iran who are facing this crisis to lower the temperature of their homes. Pezeshkian has appealed to everyone to bear this burden together. Many people have not agreed to his call.

Efforts to reduce consumption

To reduce consumption, government office hours have been reduced to 8 am to 2pm until February and work from home has been implemented where possible. Non-essential businesses have been ordered to close, while shopping centres have been required to shut by 8pm to avoid cuts in gas and electricity supplies.

Iran, a gas-rich country

The growing gas shortage in the gas-rich country is alarming, officials have said that there is a shortage of 350 million cubic meters of natural gas every day, as well as fuel for power plants. Due to this shortage, about a dozen power plants in the country have been shut down. Due to which the power shortage has increased further across the country.

Restrictions are a big reason

Iran has the second largest natural gas reserves in the world. It is also among the top countries in terms of oil reserves, but US sanctions and low investment have hindered their modernization and the country is getting trapped in economic, political and energy crisis.
