America's strictness! Every 6 hours an Indian is deported from the US
Even though there is talk of good diplomatic relations between India and America, the process of sending Indians back to their homeland is continuing. According to a report, the speed of expelling immigrants from America is such that in the past year 2024, one Indian was deported from America to India every 6 hours.
According to the annual report for the fiscal year 2024 released by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on December 19, one Indian was deported from the US to India every 6 hours this year. The special thing is that there has been no decline in the number in this case, rather there has been a huge increase.
The number increased more in 2024 compared to 2023
There has been a huge increase of 400 percent in the number of Indians deported between 2024 (1,529 out of 2,71,484) as compared to 2021 (292 out of a total of 59,011 deportees). While in the year 2023, 1,42,580 people were deported from America, including 370 Indians. While in 2022, out of 72,177 deported, 276 were Indians.
A senior official at India's central agency said, "The fluctuations in removal numbers over the past few years can be attributed to various factors, including changes in US immigration policies, enforcement priorities, and bilateral agreements between India and the US." He said that the increase in numbers in 2024 may also reflect broader migration trends and enforcement actions targeting people without legal status in the US.
What was the situation during Trump's first term?
During the COVID pandemic in 2019 and 2020, during Donald Trump's first term as US President, a total of 3,928 (1,616 and 2,312 respectively) illegal Indian immigrants were deported. By comparison, when Joe Biden took over as US President in 2021, the total number of Indians deported had reached 3,467 by the time the report was released in 2024.
The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has already compiled a list of people scheduled for deportation, and about 18,000 Indians who are not fully documented have been identified and are likely to be sent home. ICE data up to November 2024 shows that 17,940 Indians are among the 14.4 lakh people who have not been detained with a final order of removal from the US.
