A 60-year-old man has been arrested in the US for running a secret Chinese police station in Manhattan. This man used to keep an eye on Chinese dissidents and torture them through this secret police station.

The US Justice Department has said that 60-year-old Chen Jinping could face up to 5 years in prison for conspiring to work as an illegal agent of the Chinese government.

China's secret police station in Manhattan!

Along with Chen Jinping, another man Harry Lu Jianwang was also arrested in April last year. Both are accused of operating a secret police station in Manhattan for China's Ministry of Public Security. Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen says, "Today's guilty plea holds Chen accountable for attempting to operate an undeclared overseas police station for China's national security forces, which is a clear affront to American sovereignty."

Senior FBI official Robert Wells said Chen's case shows how the Chinese Communist Party government uses devious efforts to threaten, harass, and intimidate those who speak out against it.

He said that such gross violations will not be tolerated on US soil. Lu, the other man arrested along with Chen Jinping, has not been convicted yet and his trial is yet to take place.

China's secret posts in many countries!

Breon Peace, Brooklyn's top federal prosecutor, says that at the time of Chen's arrest, China was busy setting up secret police posts in countries around the world. According to the US official, the two men had set up a secret police station in Manhattan's Chinatown on orders from the Fuzhou branch of the Department of Public Security, ostensibly pretending to provide services such as renewing Chinese driving licenses. But their real job was to track down and torture fugitive Chinese dissidents.

Pressure is being put on China's dissidents.

Such police stations have been exposed in many European countries including Canada. Spain's human rights group Safeguard Defenders had revealed such police stations for the first time in the world. They often work without any indication or operate in such a way that it is not known whether they are present here or not. According to US officials, officials of the Chinese Consulate in New York have been seen coming and going several times in the Manhattan office.

According to Safeguard Defenders, the police station was involved in pressuring Chinese citizens to return to the country and face criminal cases.
