110 people were killed on the charges of practicing witchcraft
This week, about 110 people have been killed in Cite Soleil, a very poor area near Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince, and surrounded by violence for years. The reason for the murder is said to be allegations of witchcraft. The leading human rights organization, the National Human Rights Defense Network (RNDDH), informed on Sunday that these murders were carried out by a local gang leader named Monel Mikano Felix in the spirit of revenge.
Gang leader Felix carried out these murders after his child fell ill and then died. According to media reports, the gang leader was told by a voodoo priest that the elders of the area had cast a spell to harm his child. The child died on Saturday afternoon, after which the gang leader became furious and ordered his gang members to take revenge.
The elderly people of the area were selectively killed.
According to RNDDH, gang members killed at least 60 people on Friday and 50 on Saturday with knives and axes. All the victims of gang attacks are said to be over 60 years of age. Cite Soleil is one of the poorest and most violence-ridden areas of Haiti. That is why gang control is very strong here.
Haiti government fails to stop gang violence.
According to the UN, Felix's gang has about 300 members and is active in areas around Port-au-Prince such as Fort Dimanche and La Saline. In the 2018 La Saline massacre, about 71 people were killed and hundreds of houses were set on fire. Haiti's government is struggling with political strife and has failed to stop the growing dominance of gangs around the capital.
