Sanjay Roy, found guilty of committing a heinous crime against a trainee doctor in Kolkata, has been sentenced to life imprisonment till death.

Kolkata: Sanjay Roy, who was found guilty in the heinous case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has been sentenced to life imprisonment till death. However, it was expected that the convict Sanjay Roy could be sentenced to death, as this incident had caused outrage in the whole country.

But the decision of Sealdah Sessions Court of West Bengal has disappointed people. However, the lawyer has explained the logic behind the decision of the Additional Judge of the Sessions Court to award life imprisonment. Advocate Rehman told the media that the Additional Judge of the Sessions Court argued that this crime cannot be put in the 'rarest of rare' category.

"The additional judge of the sessions court has sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment till death. The court has directed the state government to pay a compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the victim's family. The CBI had sought death penalty for the accused in the case. The judge said that this is not a rarest of rare case, so death penalty was not given," Rahman said.

Additional Judge Anirban Das of the Sealdah Sessions Court pronounced the verdict in the trainee doctor rape-murder case that took place on August 9 last year.

The lower court ordered Sanjay Roy to pay a fine of Rs 50,000. Judge Das said that this crime does not fall in the 'rarest of rare' category, due to which the decision not to give death penalty to the culprit is justified. The judge rejected the CBI's demand for death penalty. The judge said that under Section 66, Sanjay Roy will remain in jail till his death.

Advocate Rehman said, "The CBI demanded the death penalty. The defence lawyer said that instead of the death penalty, a jail sentence should be given as this crime does not fall in the rarest of rare category."

The court said, "The victim died while on duty at her workplace hospital, hence it is the responsibility of the state government to provide compensation to the doctor's family."

What did the victim's father say about the verdict?

On the court's decision, the victim's father said, "The court has given what it thought was a good decision based on the evidence presented by the CBI. We have many questions about the investigation done by the CBI. We did not go to court for compensation. We want justice, not compensation. The Kolkata police did wrong and the CBI will have to do something. The Kolkata police has given us more pain than my daughter's death."
