On the New Year, a ban has come into effect in Switzerland on women wearing a burqa or any other way to cover their faces completely in public places. According to the information, if any woman violates this law, she will be fined up to 1000 Swiss francs i.e. 96 thousand rupees.

The proposal was introduced by the right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP), while the Central and Greens parties opposed it. Before Switzerland, the niqab and burqa have also been banned in France, Belgium, Denmark, Austria, Netherlands and Bulgaria. In these countries, covering the face is not allowed in public places like offices, transport, restaurants and shops. The hijab covers the head, neck and ears but the face remains open.
